Mactan Island is known for its history being the site of the so called Battle of Mactan, the first violent incident between native Filipinos and Europeans. In this attack, which occurred in 1521, the explorer Ferdinand Magellan met his death in a surprise ambush at the hands of the tribesmen under the local chieftain Lapu-Lapu, for whom Lapu-Lapu City was named. The Muslim Chieftain Lapu-Lapu Lured Magellan to the island on the pretext of converting Christianity.  Magellan came with only a small force believing Lapu-Lapu was wanting to convert.

Mactan is also known for its many guitar factories, Shell Craft industry and Beach Resorts. Cebu International Airport is the second largest airport in the Philippines and is actually situated on Mactan, near Lapu-Lapu City, still known under its former name Opon. There is also a Free Trade Zone on Mactan where many well known International companies including Intel, NEC and Citizen
