Mactan Island is known for being the site of the so called ‘Battle of Mactan’, the first recorded violent incident between native Filipinos and Europeans in 1521. It was during this battle that the explorer Ferdinand Magellan met his death at the hands of the local tribesmen under their chieftain Lapu-Lapu, for whom Lapu-Lapu City was named. Some accounts say the Muslim Chieftain Lapu-Lapu lured Magellan to the island on the pretext of converting to Christianity. Magellan came with only a small force believing Lapu-Lapu was wanting to convert. Other accounts claim Magellan was keen to show off his military prowess to other island chieftains and broke the expedition’s rule of not becoming involved in local politics. His other captains were not keen to support him in this venture and so his troops numbered only about 100, against over a thousand Filipinos.

Mactan is also known for its many guitar factories, shell craft industry and beach resorts. Cebu International Airport is the second largest airport in the Philippines and is actually situated on Mactan, near Lapu-Lapu City and still known under its former name, Opon. There is also a Free Trade Zone on Mactan where many well known international companies including Intel, NEC, Timex and Citizen have factories and assembly plants.

The Cebu Yacht Club offers visiting yachtsmen safe berthing facilities while on the southern side of the island there are numerous resorts with their own, private beaches. Scuba diving, island hopping and many other aquatic activities are offered by these resorts. They include Plantation Bay and the Shangri-La, both of which are world class, five star venues.

Mactan is also home to several English language schools and has numerous Korean, Japanese, German and other European restaurants as well as a variety of night time entertainment for all tastes. Come and visit Mactan for business or pleasure, or perhaps a little of both!
